Prioritizing Green Infrastructure for Chena River Road Crossings
Between 2023-2025, TVWA has been working on a project to identify and prioritize the road crossings contributing the most contaminants to the Chena River and its tributaries through stormwater runoff; We have also developed conceptual designs for green infrastructure treatments to reduce that runoff. We hope these resources can be used by ADOT&PF, FASTPlanning, the Cities of Fairbanks and North Pole, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Department of Rural Services to more effectively plan maintenance and reconstruction projects for these road crossings. This project was funded by an Alaska Clean Water Grant administered by Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

TVWA will coordinate and gather input from the Fairbanks North Star Borough, FAST Planning, Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, the City of North Pole, and the City of Fairbanks to inventory road crossings of the Chena River and its tributaries. This task will also use the information gathered in the desktop study completed in Task 1 to complete a road crossing inventory. TVWA will complete site visits as needed to collect adequate data for prioritization in Task 3. After completing the inventory, the information gathered will be presented to the project partners for prioritization (Task 3) and green infrastructure designs (Task 4). (PDF - 631 KB)

The following report details field data collection for Grant ACWA-23-08. TVWA held a stakeholder meeting on July 11th, 2023, to review the prioritization of criteria and detailed plans for site assessments. Proposed protocols were approved with some input, and fieldwork was conducted during August and September. (PDF - 117 KB)

With the prioritized road crossings selected and green infrastructure needs identified, TVWA will research and evaluate potential Green Infrastructure (GI) practices for application to the prioritized road crossing locations. TVWA will recommend which practice would be most appropriate to the prioritized locations. (PDF - 2 MB)
